Since web galleries and social bookmarking sites are really popular these days you probably wondered how they are getting instant screen shots of web pages. So here’s the list of some websites that are offering these kind of services which you can use if you are planing to start a web gallery for example, instead of doing it all by yourself (cutting, slicing etc..)
If you think I have missed any please let me know. And just a quick tip, i’m planing to write a tutorial for those kind of sites in some of my next posts so subscribe
Alexa Site Thumbnail
The Alexa Site Thumbnail web service provides developers with programmatic access to thumbnail images for the home pages of web sites. It offers access to Alexa’s large and growing collection of images, gathered from its comprehensive web crawl. Service Highlights: Ease of use, Broad and expanding image collection, Responsive and Multi-size access.
Pay only for what you use. There is no minimum fee, and no start-up cost. $0.0002 / thumbnail returned (i.e. $0.20 per 1,000 thumbnails). No charge if the thumbnail does not exist. http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?node=236156011
Websnapr
Websnapr lets you capture screenshots of (almost) any web page. Allow your visitors to instantly visualize any web page before clicking. Increase site traffic, click-through rate and site stickiness. It’s really easy to use with single line of code just replace url, size and key to make the magic happen. You can get up to 4 different sizes by setting the size parameter.
It’s free of charge but you have small watermark on screenshot. There’s also Premium service for customized screenshots starting at $45 for 500,000 delivered snaps per month. So only remark for now is that they don’t have pay just for the ones you got like amazon, but do check out their plugins for Drupal, Wordpress and other. http://www.websnapr.com/
webshot.in
Webshot.in is free service but the first time till the webshot is generated you get an advertisement displayed. It’s also really ease to use but this time you need to include small JavaScript also with 4 four different images sizes to suit your needs. Example of code looks like this
<script type=”javascript” src=”http://webshot.in/thumbshot/getshot.php?url=”>
</script>
WebShotsPro.com
After reading their FAQ page it looks really nice and professional and they gave good description how the process itself works so if you want to do something like this you should read this first. The screenshot generators capture the screenshots using Microsoft Internet Explorer and capture at browser size 1024×768px and resized to 640×480px and Active-x and JavaScript has been desabled. Prices start from $5 for 25, 000 per month. www.webshotspro.com
websiteshots.com
The last one i have found is websiteshots.com I had some difficulties getting it work but i guess it works (by the recent screenshots in sidebar). In their words: Use this as a web service to grab website screenshots for whatever you need. Choose from the following easy REST interfaces and you’ll get back either a bit of XML or JSON containing the following screenshot URLs with the given dimensions. Free of charge with small watermark. http://websiteshots.com/

To bad it’s not in English but i will test it and ad it on this post, thanks man!
OoO I’ve got a new one, a french solution launched yesterday : http://thumbs.miwim.fr/
Its forces : it’s totally free, it can capture internal pages (like artviper), it generates its in less than 1 minute (tested) and no marker on the capture, they just request a backlink.
Good isn’t it ?
[Hope their servers are good too, it’s the keypoint of this sort of services.]

There’s also a nice Firefox extension that’ll allow you to save a .png image of any web page (or just a portion of a page) you can view. The name’s Abduction! It even updated for the Firefox 3 Beta versions. Check it out here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3408
